What’s happening

In 2017, Planting Peace began the task of rescuing Asian elephants out of slavery. The first elephant we rescued, named Mae, was 35 years old and enslaved her whole life in the logging industry in Laos.  Planting Peace found her chained to a tree starving and thirsty. Unfortunately, this situation is not unique. Elephants are often used for labor in logging, or in tourism where they are exploited and mistreated.

Types of elephants we rescue

Logging

Asia is home to 10,000 elephants enslaved in the logging industry. The elephants are forced to work long hours pulling trees out of the forest. It is grueling and tiring work that causes many health issues for the elephant plus quality of life.

Tourism

Nearly 2,000 elephants are enslaved in riding camps made for tourists to ride on their backs. In addition to health risks involved in making an elephant carry people on it’s back, the real danger is what takes place behind the scenes. These elephants are kept chained and are stabbed with bull hooks to get them to “behave properly.” Many of these elephants are even blinded. (Please never ride an elephant)
