Remembering Taylor

On April 2, 2015, a young transgender teen named Taylor Alesena took her own life due to constant bullying. She was a couragous young lady who documented her own personal struggles online to help bring light to others. In memory of this beautiful child, Planting Peace has painted the Equality House the colors of the transgender flag. The house will remain painted this way for one week in honor of Taylor.

Suicide rates among transgender youth are tragically high. Nearly half of young transgender people have seriously thought about taking their lives, and one quarter report having made a suicide attempt. Research shows that each episode of LGBT victimization, such as physical or verbal harassment or abuse, increases the likelihood of self-harming behavior by 2.5 times on average. We need to show support of our transgender youth; yet being a supporter is not enough. We must be vocal in advocating for them. We must have zero tolerance for bullying or shaming, or for physcial or verbal abuse. Please take a stand for children like Taylor. To all the transgender children in the world, we love you.
