Rainforest Conservation
Save The Amazon
The Amazon Rainforest is the single largest forest in the world, making up half of the worlds remaining forest. Its 1.7 billion acres occupies nine Countries in South America. Unfortunately, the Amazon is being cut down at a very high rate. Between 1991 and 2000 it is estimated that an area six times the size of Portugal has been lost. The global impact of losing this forest will be devastating. The Amazon alone produces two out of every ten breaths we take and a majority of our medicine comes from the plants within its boundaries.
Why is the Amazon being cut down?
The number one reason the Amazon is being cut down is for cattle faming. It is estimated 91% of land deforested since 1970 is for this reason. Most farmers use a 'slash and burn' technique. This technique of deforestation is when huge tracks of land are set on fire to clear way for more fertile land.
